Reproduction Chairs And Desks For the Antique Look
My number one priority was to change the look of the sitting room as that was the room the family used most and which visitors always came into. They probably didn’t notice how out of place everything seemed, but I did. I felt I’d walked onto a TV drama set designed by a five year old. My budget was tight after the move so I had to prioritise my needs, but I also knew I had to do things quickly.
My new-old furniture looked mismatched, out of place and thoroughly uncomfortable in every room it sat. Anachronistic, is the right word, I believe. A bit like an iPod suddenly cropping up in a Dickens’ classic. Every day it looked worse and every day my dismay grew. Most of my budget had gone on the house and move, so I couldn’t possibly afford to start trawling the antique shops and auctions for replacement furniture.
At first I started looking for cheaper second-hand furniture, but then came across the Newby House Interiors website offering quality reproduction antiques at affordable prices. Perfect! I’d already made a list and needed to start with the most important room: the sitting room (or parlour as the Victorians called it). Anyway, it had a William Morris style fireplace so that gave me my focal point.
I was very impressed by what I saw. The site was really well illustrated and easy to navigate so after a few clicks I was already adding items to the wish list facility to come back to later. I needed seating primarily and there was such a great choice to select from that I had a bit of dilemma. However I kept coming back to the Savona settee, partly because I couldn’t believe the price but mostly because it was exactly the style I wanted. It was upholstered in faux suede with cabriole legs and just screamed out comfort and elegance to me. I could have chosen my own upholstery, but I liked the diamond pattern one shown very much.
Finding the sofas made it easier to think about the rest. I was desperate to get rid of our so-called entertainment unit that was open shelving and stuffed with CDs and DVDs. I saw this reproduction two-door, two-drawer inlaid bookcase that was just the thing. No more clutter! It is available in mahogany or yew wood finishes and has a definite 50s look to the grain that’s perfectly in keeping with the house. Matching that with a two door, two drawer showcase cabinet wasn’t just a spark of genius, but solved all my storage problems in the sitting room.
With a bit more confidence, I decided to look for a dining table and chairs. I had less choice here as I had inherited an oak dresser and sideboard from my grandmother, so I wanted an oak finished dining table to match. Because the site offered a colour and shade matching service, I knew I would get a perfect match. I found an ideal single pedestal table, available in several different wood finishes, which I could match with a set of comfortable upholstered dining chairs, again in a faux suede finish and all at a great saving. I decided to just buy four, knowing I could add to them later.
It was the finish of all of these items that really impressed me. You can choose between highly polished and distressed looks to suit your tastes and the careful craftsmanship shows through in every piece. The site has a couple of videos talking you through the construction process and giving you tips about what to look for as marks of quality and durability in furniture.
I was so glad I found that site. My family thought I’d gone a bit mad at first, and then when they saw my makeover they accused me of calling in one of those TV designer teams to do the work!. You don’t have to be an interior designer to know what will work when you have that kind of choice available. If you don’t believe me, I’d recommend you take a look for yourself.
