Security Cameras – Technical Considerations That One Should Bear In Mind
If you were thinking of installing security cameras, the obvious factors that will come to mind would be the price, size, design and maybe the colour when deciding which is the best option. Although these are important considerations, there are other equally important factors which many people overlook when purchasing Security Cameras, namely Technical Specifications.
If you have ever scrutinised the technical specification supplied with a unit, you have probably come across terms like automatic gain control, CMOS or automatic white balance and many others. They are not meant to confuse you but impact on the expected performance of the unit you go for.
Starting with automatic white balance, it is the aspect that influences the detail captured in the images. White balance is the process that helps remove any distorted coloring. This means that objects appearing white will be rendered white on the captured images. For proper balance, the camera must filter the brightness of the light source.
With the automatic system, it is possible to eliminate unrealistic blue, orange and green casts. With automatic white balance, your unit can work perfectly indoors and outdoors whether it is sunny or cloudy. The only problem is where the scene is dominated by one main colour which can undermine its performance. However, since the units are normally installed in a single location, this should not be a major problem.
Automatic gain control refers to the ability of the unit to amplify the video signal in the case of receding light. This means that when you go for a device with this feature, it can capture ordinary images in normal light conditions. In cases where the light drops beyond a certain level, the amplifying process will be initiated and the picture quality maintained.
This feature can be very helpful in capturing good images with limited light. However, it can lead to problems in cases where the amplification works on the entire image. This will cause more background noise. For better results, a system that suppresses background noise amplification would be the best.
The encoding option offered should also be included in your list of requirements. The best units are those offering different options such as MPEG4 and M-JPEG. For images that will be streamed over low bandwidth links, MPEG4 is the best option due to its higher compression. On the other hand, if you are looking for high resolution playback, M-JPEG will serve your purpose.
From all the points above, it is clear that technical specifications should not be overlooked when buying security cameras. Conducting thorough research before you make a purchase is vital. Keeping this in mind will help ensure that you buy the camera most suited to your needs.
