Anyone have any info on Santiago, Chile?

Hello, I am interested in finding someone that either lives in Santiago, or who has spent some time there, to answer questions, and provide information.

I am planning a trip there next July (to include skiing). I am most interested in finding a reputable place to stay for at least one week, perhaps two. Such as a condo or flat rental. With a location central to the downtown area (shopping, eating, nightlife).

I have found a couple websites that have vacation rentals, but they provide little in the way of information such as specific websites and street locations.

Either post any links or suggestions here, or if you like, email me (or IM) at:

Thanks so much in advance,
John

ps: I live in the US.

Hi John!

People will be gladly welcome back to this very First World city. I am not talking about Europe or the U.S., but rather one of South America’s premier cities. The capital of Chile, Santiago is the lively and pulsing nerve center for a country that enjoys a reputation of having Latin America’s strongest economy, one of the lowest levels of corruption, and highest standard of living.

Santiago has become a very sophisticated destination. It’s among the top five World’s Emerging Metropolis, today. It’s the corporate capital of LatinAmerica since over 20years and the safest metropolitan capital in The Americas.

Central Chile is the cultural nucleus of the country. All of Chile’s largest cities are located here, as are most of its universities and industries, its world-class vineyards, finest agricultural lands, colonial and early republican architecture.

In fact, central Chile is something of a microcosm of the country, balanced between deserts to the north and forests to the south, with the capital poised between the highest peaks in the Americas and a host of premier beach and ski resorts by driving distance (I recommend to rent a car online and pick it up in the airport.. unless you are going to spend urban life, because urban transportatioon is great). Huge infrastructure projects have been completed in record time, leaving the city with a set of fast and efficient freeway tunnels, as well as an ever-expanding metro subway service, both of which would be the envy of any modern capital city in the world.

PERSPECTIVE:

Santiago, the capital, is a focal point of Latin American commerce in towards the prosperous Pacific Rim countries and the point of entry for nearly all international arrivals. Clean and modern, Santiago sits in a basin between the Coast Range to the west and the Andes to the east. World-class ski areas in the central Andes lie only forty-five minutes away, up steep switchbacks which climb over 7500 feet in twenty-six miles. Numerous vineyards surround the capital; hotsprings, seventeenth-century colonial haciendas, and national parks in both the Andes and the Coastal Mountains, all make easy day trips.

OUTDOORS AND FUN

Unlike many others capitals, Santiago, Chile has a rich outdoors sports life. This has one of the largest urban parks in the world in downtown (San Cristobal park – 722 hectareas or 1785 acres), just located aside of the bohemian Bellavista neighborhood.
Safe, clean and well developed park considered now as one of the hidden secrets in the world today. This lush park includes a 4.5 hectareas zoo (Jardin Zoologico), a cable car, international gardens and restaurants. Ideal for tourists , outdoors sports, trecking, hiking, mountain biking, panoramic swimming pool (Chilean summer, seasons are reversed). Great to take shots after a winter storm!

At night, the bohemian Bellavista Neighborhood is a liberal and popular enclave similar atmosphere of NYC Greenwich Village. So visitors may choose from a variety of restaurants serving all types of regional and Ethinc cuisines, Art Galleries, Theaters and Discos for every minority and excellent boutique-hotels assure a good night’s sleep for business or pleasure.

Every year, Santiago has a festive summertime in January, february and March. January because its the virtual cultural Capital of the world with 100s of Theatres from over 30 nations doing indoor and incredible outdoor performances. So February is the month of festivals for Chile (and carnivals for brazil). The first or second weekend of March is the worldfamous Wine Harvest Party in Santa Cruz, in the upscale colchagua valley. Central Chile’s weather in summer is wonderful everyday is sunny, breezy, warm and pleasant and no A/C requires to go around.

COUNTRYSIDE & MOUNTAINS

If you are going to the countryside or the mountains cheaply, rent a car online and pick it in the International airport (USD$50/day – 80% of cars are mechanic-, gasoline is $2.20/gallon by Dec2008) and visit the wineyards, the mountains and the sea. They are located in less two hours driving by highway.

WHERE TO STAY?

There are lots of hostales or “hospedajes” or “alojamientos” (thats how chileans call to Bed and Breakfast) with a huge variety of standards from rustic to luxury. Most international chained hotels are so pricey and have 4 or 5 stars or ultra luxury such as The Ritz or The Grand Hyatt.

So listen me carefully: Santiago is an exciting eclectic city.. in some areas look like Europe and other look too American. I strongly recommend PROVIDENCIA area. Anywhere in Providencia area is simply GREAT . Why? it’s great because you’ll have everything by walk or bus/subway ($0.60 electronic ticket must be purchased on stations) . Taxi is inexpensive (a
