Trainees In The Workplace

With the manufacturing base of the UK being somewhat moved to other countries, how does this effect school leavers who want to learn skills. The tradition in the UK ha been with apprenticeship schemes. These schemes work well , by offering work and the gradual use of tools and machines,watched over by experienced people. Colleges have now introduced shorter courses, either completely at college or part college, part placement.

After school where ,the responsibility has been to give the students a broad education,and try to prepare them for future life. The young people have to go through quite a struggle to gain experience and qualifications to proceed further.In the manufacturing sector,in the UK manufacturing is decreasing,so it is hoped that most youngsters will find work in the service sector.

The construction industry is a very large employer of skilled and unskilled labor. When the world enters a recession,construction slows down , to a low level, as people can not afford to buy houses. In this economic climate the school leavers find their situation even more difficult.

I was very privileged, to be invited to attend a recent award evening for apprentices, and college bound young people.I was most impressed by the standard of achievement, I was very pleased to see that the skills were being passed on, the bricklaying course, was at a high standard with flemish bond raked joints currently on show as that was the lesson of the week.

In the furniture making section I was most impressed with some of the detailed work,especially the way the students did their own designs. I was most impressed with some of the pine wardrobes, the the students had to make small wardrobes based on a standard pine wardrobe. They also made mini tables with very small legs, based on traditional farmhouse tables. I ended my evening very impressed that the system of training our young people seems to be working very well
