Using Aquaponic Systems To Help Address Hunger
Some people are working hard on creating aquaponic systems that can be installed in many parts of the world where people face hunger everyday. These units allow the use of agriculture and water animals to work in a way that supports both of these living things survive and flourish.
The Aztec are known to be among the first people to use this process to feed their people thousands of years ago. They put crops on little islands they developed and had them float out on ponds. As the nutrients filtered out from the crops and settled in the water, fish ate it to survive. Then the fish expended wastes from their bodies that the plants could use for their survival.
A number of other areas came to understand this relationship as well. In the Far East many years ago, the rice farmers learned how the product that they grew could help certain types of fish survive in the rice paddies, and how those fish helped to make their rice grow better. They created methods to help this relationship blossom.
Modern techniques involving the use of mechanical devices to circulate water and provide areas for nutrients to grow came into production in the 1980s. A simulated environment was made to imitate the natural process of water circulation. There are a number of things to make this work properly.
Some of the things necessary to create the environment are a tank big enough to hold as they grow. One also has to have an areas to float plants above the water circulating through the devices. A place where certain nutrients can grow and a process to remove solids wastes is needed. Then one needs a pump that keeps the water moving.
The aquaponic systems can be developed in most regions of the world. They are growing processes for crops and water animals that can help feed people in areas where the arid weather makes agriculture difficult. They can also be used to grow fresh produce in almost any backyard.
