What Teens Should Do Before Finding Work
The only obstacle a teenager faces when entering the workforce, are labor laws. There are certain restrictions that will determine the type of job he or she can perform.
Since every state has different laws, it’s best to speak with someone who may know about these laws. You can also research the information provided on your states website.
There is a limit to the hours of work a teenager from the age of 14 or 15 can perform. Generally the daily amount is three hours and eighteen hours weekly. However during the summer months when school isn’t in session, students are allowed to work full time hours which are eight hours per day and 40 hours weekly.
The necessary documentation must be obtained in order for a student to apply for work in many states. Schools will generally have this paperwork available. Don’t be shy about asking for this, as it’s their duty to keep you informed as to what needs to be done.
Some states actually require the soon to be employer to submit a letter of employment intentions. This must be submitted before the student will get the okay on a job. A copy of the same must also be turned in to the school.
Make sure that you find something you would enjoy doing. By doing so you will work to the best of your abilities and that builds good work ethic. A good work ethic will follow you into adulthood.
Jobs that involve the use of power tools or driving are not acceptable for minors. Just keep in mind there are some stipulations to working as a minor.
Parents and counselors at your school can be of assistance during your job search. So don’t be afraid to ask questions to get answers you don’t know. Even going by a place you would like to work to ask if they are currently hiring would be okay.
